Immanuel Kant, a central figure in modern philosophy, believed in the fundamental importance of human autonomy. He argued that human beings are capable of making moral decisions not because of external influences but because of their inherent ability to reason and apply judgement. He proposed a moral philosophy, known as deontological ethics, where the morality of an action is assessed based on the nature of the action itself rather than its outcomes. He also held that space and time are forms of our sensibility and that we can never transcend our subjective, human way of viewing things. This led to his metaphysical theory of transcendental idealism.

Biographyarrow

Immanuel Kant was born on April 22, 1724, in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). He was the fourth of nine children to Johann Georg Kant and Anna Regina Cant. His parents were devoted followers of the Pietist branch of the Lutheran church, which influenced his education and philosophy later in life. Kant never married and lived his entire life in the vicinity of his birthplace. He studied at the Collegium Fridericianum and later at the University of Königsberg. Kant held various jobs early in his career, including private tutoring, until he was eventually appointed as a professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Königsberg in 1770. His most influential works include 'Critique of Pure Reason', 'Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals', and 'Critique of Practical Reason'. Kant retired from teaching in 1797, and his health gradually declined until he passed away on February 12, 1804.

Awards and Recognitionarrow

During his lifetime, Kant didnt receive any formal awards or honors as such recognitions were not common during his era. However, his philosophical ideas and works were highly acknowledged and respected. Posthumously, he is widely recognized as one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Western philosophy. His thoughts have influenced a broad range of fields including philosophy, political theory, psychology, physics, and theology. Various institutions and places have been named in his honor, including the Kant University of Kaliningrad and the asteroid 7083 Kant.
