Visionarrow

Cervantes vision was that of a realist. His life experiences, including his time as a soldier, a tax collector, and a prisoner, significantly influenced his writing. He believed in presenting life as it is, without embellishment or idealization, which is evident in his masterpiece, Don Quixote. He also had a vision of literature as a tool for exploring and understanding the human condition.

Biographyarrow

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. He lived during the Spanish Golden Age, a period of flourishing in arts and literature in Spain. His father was a surgeon who was often in debt, and this caused the family to move frequently. Despite these hardships, Cervantes was well educated and had a great love for literature. In his early twenties, he left Spain to join the Spanish military. During a naval battle in 1571, he was injured and lost the use of his left hand. After recovering from his injuries, he was captured by Barbary pirates on his way back to Spain and was held captive for five years until his family could afford to pay his ransom. Upon his return to Spain, Cervantes held several administrative positions but was often in trouble with the law due to financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, he continued to write. In 1605, he published the first part of Don Quixote. The novel was an instant success and established Cervantes as a major literary figure. The second part of Don Quixote was published in 1615, and Cervantes continued to write until his death in 1616.

Awards and Recognitionarrow

While Cervantes did not receive any formal awards or recognition during his lifetime, his work has had a lasting impact on literature. Don Quixote is considered one of the most significant works of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. It is also considered one of the greatest novels ever written. Cervantes' influence on the Spanish language has been so great that Spanish is often referred to as 'the language of Cervantes.' His work is studied in schools and universities around the world, and his life and work are celebrated annually on April 23rd, the date of his death, known as the Day of the Book.
