Historyarrow

Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders), is located on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The waterfall was named Victoria Falls by the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone, who was the first European to view the falls in 1855, in honor of Queen Victoria. The local tribes used to call it Mosi-oa-Tunya, though, which is still in use today. The Zambezi River is the fourth largest river in Africa, and Victoria Falls is considered to be the world's largest sheet of falling water.

Architecturearrow

Victoria Falls is a natural wonder, sculpted by geological processes over millions of years. It is approximately 1.7 kilometers wide and 108 meters high. During the flood season, an incredible amount of water cascades over the edge into the Zambezi Gorge below, creating a mist that can be seen from more than 20 kilometers away. The falls are formed by a natural fault line, which means they are divided into four segments: the Main Falls, Rainbow Falls, the Eastern Cataract in Zambia, and the Devil's Cataract in Zimbabwe.

Cultural and Religious Significancearrow

Victoria Falls holds great cultural and religious significance to the local Tonga people. They believe that the waterfall is the dwelling place of the deity Nyami Nyami, the River God. The Tonga people consider Victoria Falls a sacred site and have held many religious rites there. Today, it continues to hold spiritual significance, attracting tourists and locals alike who come to marvel at its beauty and power.

Legacyarrow

Victoria Falls has left an indelible mark as one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. Its sheer size and majesty have captivated the hearts of millions of visitors from around the globe. Furthermore, it has played a crucial role in the conservation efforts of both Zambia and Zimbabwe, providing a habitat for various species and promoting sustainable tourism.

Fun Factsarrow

Victoria Falls is considered the largest waterfall in the world due to its combined width of 1.7 kilometers and height of 108 meters. While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it is classified as the largest, based on its total area. The spray from the falls typically rises to a height of over 400 meters, and sometimes even twice as high, and is visible from up to 48 kilometers away. The waterfall is also known for its famous feature, the naturally formed 'Devil's Pool', where adventurous swimmers can take a dip on the edge of the falls during the dry season.
