Vision

Confucius, known as Kong Fuzi in his native China, was a philosopher, teacher and political theorist, whose ideas have profoundly influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese thought and life. His vision focused on personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice, and sincerity. He advocated strong family loyalty, ancestor veneration, and respect of elders by their children and of husbands by their wives. He also championed the idea of the Golden Rule, though he expressed it in a negative form: 'Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.'

Biography

Confucius was born in 551 BCE in the small feudal state of Lu in Eastern China. His father died when he was very young, and he was raised by his mother in poverty. Despite these hardships, Confucius was exceptionally bright and showed a great thirst for knowledge. As a young man, he worked a variety of jobs while seeking to improve his education. He eventually became involved in government, serving as a justice official and later as a minister. However, his political career was marked by clashes with the ruling class, and he was eventually forced into exile. During his exile, he began to spread his philosophical ideas, gathering a group of devoted followers. His teachings were later collected by his disciples in the 'Analects of Confucius'. He passed away in 479 BCE, but his teachings continue to have a profound influence on East Asian thought and life to this day.

Awards and Recognition

While Confucius did not receive awards or recognitions in the modern sense during his lifetime, his influence on Chinese and East Asian thought and culture has been immense. He is considered one of the most important and influential individuals in human history. He has been honored with temples dedicated to him, known as 'Temples of Confucius', all across China and other East Asian countries. Furthermore, Confucius's thought, often known as Confucianism, has been recognized as one of the 'Three Teachings', along with Buddhism and Taoism, which have shaped Chinese civilization. In 1988, China issued the 'Confucius Peace Prize' as a response to the Nobel Peace Prize, further demonstrating his lasting cultural impact.
