History

Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is an iconic American landmark. It features the faces of four United States Presidents, namely George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, carved into the granite face of the mountain. The idea of carving famous people into the Black Hills was first suggested by Jonah LeRoy Doane Robinson, a South Dakota historian, in 1923. His initial idea was to promote tourism in the area. However, the concept evolved into something much greater, a monument dedicated to the birth, growth, preservation, and development of the United States.

Architecture

The sculptor behind Mount Rushmore was Gutzon Borglum, a Danish-American artist. He started the project in 1927 and worked on it until his death in 1941. The project was then completed by his son, Lincoln Borglum, later that same year. The monument stands approximately 5,725 feet above sea level and covers 1,278.45 acres. Each presidential head is about 60 feet high, and the noses of the presidents are approximately 20 feet long, their mouths are 18 feet wide, and the eyes are 11 feet across.

Fun Facts

The original plan for Mount Rushmore was to depict the presidents from head to waist, but due to insufficient funding, only the heads were completed. Despite the massive scale of the project, no workers died during the construction of the monument. Also, Thomas Jefferson was originally started on George Washington's right, but due to unsuitable rock, the partially completed face was blasted off and carved on Washington's left.
