The world runs on a colossal instrument called THE GREAT ENGINE — half cathedral organ, half orrery, half metronome — tended by a tall grey conductor known as TIME MASTER. Time Master is not evil. Time Master is efficient. Long ago, someone calculated that a smile costs 0.4 seconds of productivity, and Gris has been counting them out of the world ever since: four hundred a day at birth, twenty by adulthood. The missing three hundred and eighty are stored, catalogued and silent, in a vault of grey glass jars. Zipx, Dipx and Switx are not sent. They are not chosen. They are simply curious — and there is a button.
