Overview

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford since 1964.  It's the longest-produced Ford car nameplate and the fifth best-selling Ford car.  Originally conceived as a sporty coupe and convertible, the Mustang spawned the "pony car" segment, characterized by its stylish "long hood, short deck" proportions.  Its initial success, exceeding projected sales by a significant margin, led to numerous competitors and influenced coupe designs worldwide. The Mustang has undergone seven generations, evolving from its compact origins to a range of models with varying performance levels and features. While predominantly rear-wheel drive, the Mustang lineup has branched out to include the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.

History and Development

First Generation (1964-1973): Launched as a compact, sporty coupe with various engine options, including the legendary 289 V8.
Second to Fourth Generations (1974-2004): The Mustang adapted to fuel economy concerns in the 1970s but regained its muscle car heritage with the Fox-body (1979-1993) and SN-95 (1994-2004) models.
Fifth to Seventh Generations (2005-Present):
Retro styling returned (2005-2014) with the S197 generation.
The sixth generation (2015-2023) introduced a modern, global Mustang with independent rear suspension and turbocharged EcoBoost engines.
The seventh generation (2024-present) features an updated 5.0L Coyote V8 and advanced digital cockpit.
